Such was the case of this fellow.

Meet Gabara. For those of you who don't recognize him, Gabara was and is a star of Japanese monster movies. He fought Godzilla in All Monster's Attack. Of course, Godzilla gave him a quite the beat down but such is the life of a monster.

The figure, itself, is almost 7 inches tall. He is made of soft vinyl. The owner of the figure is a collector of Japanese monster and mecha figures. He requested me to paint Gabara and provided much reference material. I was a bit worried about painting such a large figure and about getting paint to stick to soft vinyl. But I thought everything went pretty smoothly and my painting method seems durable enough.

Below is a close up of his head.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I used to stay up late on Saturday night to watch the Bob Wilken's show. He always had a horror or sci-fi movie to show. Great Fun.

Until next time,

Ken
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; And when I do start projects I only work on them a little at a time. I finally finished this DBA post Mongol Russian army after starting it about six months ago. Well, it's origin go back even further as I had painted many of the elements years ago but didn't like how they turned out. So I stripped and repainted several of the figures.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_suwel3KRbBw/TUG2Zvc_2yI/AAAAAAAAATY/nROgaL13yLs/s1600/general.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; They are mounted on Litko wooden bases. The flags and banners are all hand made from sheet brass. I've used paper before but I like the idea of metal banners for metal figures. To the right are two cavalry elements. The fellow in green, pointing the way with his sword is what I will use for the general of this army.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_suwel3KRbBw/TUG2bgbDYhI/AAAAAAAAATc/djXVKAG7VF8/s1600/Gulay+Gorod.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; This was completely scratch built based on a small bit of research I did. I'm not sure how entirely accurate it is but it looks cool none the less. In DBA terms this would be a war wagon or WWg. Yes, I know it's mounted on a 40mm square so it's not legal with the current version of DBA. But I am anticipating that the new version, 3.0, will go with 40mm square basing for these element types. Below this photo is another of what is going on behind the wall.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_suwel3KRbBw/TUG2gjUkg9I/AAAAAAAAATk/Tvnu2w80bog/s1600/Boyars.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; A psiloi, a bow, and a spear. Not much but enough to keep your opponent honest. Of course, the list itself only calls for 12 elements total but I built the army to be able to employ all army building options. Oh and a few more final notes. The grass is Gale Force 9 "straw" and the snow is Sweet and Low. Or Skinny and Sweet or whatever you call that stuff. Now I just need to keep the ants away.

Until next time,
Ken

Goblins away!!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The first part are these Goblins. They are Games Workshop plastic figures. Well, not all are plastic but most are. The squigs and their herders as well as the champion with his foot on a dwarf head are metal.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_suwel3KRbBw/TUGzk6XcE1I/AAAAAAAAATA/be1Ez-0ahz0/s1600/personalities.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; To me they just aren't as crisp in detail and the "heft" of them is something that bothers me. Having said that, though, I do find I quite like these figures. I have painted other GW plastics and to my mind they seem to get it right. The detail is good and the variety they offer is excellent. For weight, well, I can always weigh down the bases if it really bothers me.

These figures will be winging their way to their owner very soon. But I wanted to share a few photos first.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_suwel3KRbBw/TUGzmfyjWlI/AAAAAAAAATE/Uc40Bh3eoyw/s1600/spear.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; I could give all sorts of excuse for this. I have had some legitimate health concerns but mostly it's because I don't spend much time on the computer. I will try to be better about updating but I won't make any promises.

This week I have a few pictures of miniatures I've recently finished. First up are some 28mm Border Reivers. These are 28mm figures from Craven Images, distributed by Monolith Designs. The figures are nicely done and paint up quite well. This is only the first six figures of a much larger commission. I will post more images as I get more figures completed. For those who don't know, the Border Reivers were a group of individuals who prowled the border area between Scotland and England. They appear to have been ruffians, scoundrels, and other ner do wells who raided and plundered for a living. Of course, both England and Scotland employed them as scouts and light cavalry for their armies.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I quite like them.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_suwel3KRbBw/TTBmwKdqR7I/AAAAAAAAASs/VdVAFV1erEE/s1600/DSC03383+%255B640x480%255D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; These figures are also a first for me as they are the first 10mm figures I've painted. I'm not sure of the manufacturer but I believe that they are Magister Millitum? The owner did tell me, once, but I can't remember. They are nice figures for their size. Interestingly, there has been some talk of smaller size figures becoming more popular as you can get more for you money. With the economic slump this may be an important factor for some. Time will tell I suppose.

For those not familiar, the British 8th army was the designation for their army that fought in the North African desert in World War Two. These were the lads who fought against the German Afrika Korps and their Italian allies. The figures came organized into groups so I'm afraid I don't know the manufacturer(s). However, I do think I recognize some Artizan figures.

What you are looking at is a squad of soldiers. They are an eleven man squad with a squad leader, armed with a PPSH-41 smg, a LMG gunner and ammo carrier, and the rest armed with Mosin Nagant rifles. Although I am not a great player and lose more often than not. So I suppose the simplicity is in the learning to play, not in how well to play.

Seen here is a Hittite army. (I/24b) The miniatures are 15mm Essex and the army is an Essex army pack. Some people don't like Essex sculpts and have problems with their horses. But I like their line of figures and I really enjoy the horses for the way they paint up. I may not be historically accurate with colors and patterns but it looks good to me. The bases are Litko. I did paint up an extra element of spears as I needed something to do with all the extra chariot riders that were provided.

If you like this army and are interested in purchasing it, I can be persuaded to sell it. I don't know if it's the " Flames of War" effect or if it's just a very popular period. Of all the nationalities I've paint by far the Germans are the ones I get the most requests for. Maybe it's because of how they performed, historically, or maybe it's because of the interesting vehicles and artillery. Or maybe it's just because in the European theater they were the enemy of just about everyone. For a painter like me, the army was certainly colorful and varied.

Here I am showing Battlefront's miniatures, mostly. I have three Napoleonic commissions going but the first two are both French.

First up are some AB miniatures. They are marked as 15mm although they do seem a bit big compared to other makers.

They are very well sculpted and they paint up well enough. You had better have an eye for detail, however, as the AB figures are very detailed indeed.

The figures showing are from a Legere battalion. Above is an artillery limber team. I have many more units to paint for this commission.

The next French commission was a unit of Middle Guard. I"m not sure of the maker of the figures but they are very well done. Again, these are 15mm and a very nice unit to paint.

Which brings me to a comment. I do like the Napoleonic era. The uniforms are colorful and there is no shortage of nationalities to model. But the figures do take longer to paint and to research. There is also the pressure to "get it right" as there are a great deal of uniform experts who will tell you that "the third regiment of foot traded in their white pom poms for chartreuse ones during the great Slobenia revolt, March of 1809. Of course they quickly switched to lavender when the regiment lost it's eagle, April 15, 1810. " I do the best I can but there comes a time in research when enough is enough and I have to put the paint to the metal. So if you ever decide to retain me for a Napoleonic commission be sure to provide some uniform details. Otherwise you will just have to trust me that I get the uniform right.

Until next time....

Sgt. The pictures in this post are miniatures produced by a company called Sgt. Majors Miniatures.

At the Huzzah convention I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman named Andy Turlington. He has recently acquired the Sgt. Majors Miniatures line and is now importing

Mutineer Miniatures from Scotland. Andy was kind enough to send me a few samples to paint.

The miniatures you see are 20mm World War Two. One figure is a late war German in winter gear. He is wearing a regulation greatcoat with a winter parka over that. The other figure is a US infantryman in a greatcoat as well. I took the liberty of painting him up as a paratrooper. You can barely make out the 101st Screaming Eagle patch on his right shoulder. Both figures paint up well.

Andy will be expanding the line but current offerings include winter Germans, winter US army, Japanese, early war US army, US Marines, and other US pacific war figures. If you game 20mm WW2 I highly recommend Sgt. Majors Miniatures. Here are a few more views....

You can find out more about Sgt. Much to his surprise these savages didn't run away but charged head long to battle....

This is a battle report from a game I played against my five year old son. Now, before you deride me for playing against a five year old let me explain a few things. My wife works a lot. And I am the stay at home Dad. Sure, I work a few odd jobs and I run my painting service but a good portion of my time is keeping my son entertained. We play a lot of games like Snakes and Ladders, Sorry, Operation....you get the picture.

In all of these games that I play with my son it turns out he wins most of the time. Sometimes I take it easy on him and sometimes I don't. But he still wins. He is very lucky with the dice and I must admit, he's pretty smart for a five year old too. I recently finished up some cavalry for the Battle of Sabis game that will be run at the Huzzah wargame convention. Go to http://www.huzzahcon.com/ for more information. But I am digressing a bit.

I had this thought that I could run a quick game against my son before mailing the figures to the organizers. I don't normally play with figures that belong to someone else but I thought the group wouldn't mind the figures being used to introduce a young one to wargaming. Yes, I am promoting wargaming to the youth (and getting a bit of revenge for all of my losses in those other games!).

I thought up a quick set of rules he could understand. I gave him a 6 inch ruler and told him each guy could move that far. He got some dice. As he chose the Barbarians to play it was easy. Once figures came into contact his barbarian guys got two attack dice for each figure. A roll of 6 meant they hit their opponent (the very fine Romans played by me). Since the Romans have armor I got two dice to try to save each hit. A roll of six saved. The Romans got only one attack die but the hairy barbarians got only one save die. Each commander (the guys with the swords) got an extra attack die. Pretty simple? Yeah, I think so. Here is how the game went along with a few pictures of the game. ..

Turns 1 through 3 found the two opposing forces deploying. Being the barbarians (and 5 years old) my son just did a headlong charge. I, being the Romans and having the "cough" superior intellect chose to deploy in a much more orderly fashion. Turn 4 found us in contact.

The barbarians started falling first. I killed two in the first contacts. They, in turn, did strike a Roman but his trusty armor saved him. Turn 5 saw the battle become split into four separate combats. On the Roman far left we had 3 Romans troopers facing 2 barbarians. 1 Roman fell but another barbarian did so as well. Next in line were the commanders of both sides. The barbarian commander was hacked down! On the far Roman right we had 4 barbarians vs 2 Romans. 1 Roman died gloriously for Rome.

Turn 6 came and the casualties started to rain upon the battlefield. Unfortunately for me there were more Roman rain drops than barbarian ones. Not to worry, though. On the far left we had wiped out the barbarians while on the far right we were the ones who suffered. I wheeled in my left (including my commander!) and my son turned his forces to meet us.

Turns 7 and 8 found more figures falling. Turn 9 found the Roman commander all alone (eek!) against 2 barbarians. I chose discretion and retreated my commander which caused my son to comment upon my weakness. Rethinking my decision, I turn my commander around for the final battle......

"Horse approaching!" came the cry from the watch commander. Ceasar watched the horse gallop from the woods and approach the camp gates. He could see that there was something tied to the horse but was unable to make out what it was. The gates were opened and the horse allowed to enter. The horse was brought before Ceasar. "My lord, it's Minimus", said one of the officers present. Ceasar gazed upon the dead body of one of his favorite soldiers. Pinned to the body was a crudly written note. "Shall I read it aloud, my lord? questioned a Centurion? Ceasar sadly nodded his approval. A perplexed look came over the Centurion's face as he tried to make sense of the note. Then he started "I'm a winner, see my prize, you're a loser who sits and cries.... "What could this mean, my lord"

Yes, I LOST! But I hope you enjoy the pictures and a laugh or two. Until next time....

Robojumbo

Sometimes, a commission comes in that is not what is expected.
I received an email about a month back from a fellow professional painter who needed a bit of help. His request for price quote to paint a 28mm elephant was met with a bit of excitement from me as I have never painted one this big before. My imagination roamed as I thought of it being perhaps a Ptolemaic elephant complete with crew. Or maybe a Sassanid type with howdah and archers. A Burmese with all those figures hanging on the sides?

Well, as you can see, it was none of those. Although it does have a Persian flair to it. While the elephant wasn't what I expected, it was quite fun to paint and, as the Monty Python troupe would say, "now for something completely different".

Enjoy!

Battlefront Germans

Just thought I would put up a bit more eye candy
for today. These are the last of an Egyptian commission. These figures will be heading out to their owner tomorrow. But I just wanted everyone to take a last look at them. All are 15mm Chariot figures.

I found myself really liking the way these figures paint up. Some packs don't have very much variation in poses, though.

While I'm just guesstimating, I would say I've painted about 300 Egyptian and allied figures for this army. I have been trying to catch up on commissions and one that I am overdue on is several units of late Roman cavalry.

These are Khurasan 15mm cavalry. They depict some Romanized Goths. The shield design is taken from the Notitia Dignitatum, which is a document showing army units and shield patterns of the late Roman army. The shield pattern is for the Equites Batavi Iuniores. Is it a faithfully reproduced copy on my part? Well, no, but it's close enough for me.

I've been asked if I hand paint all my shield designs. If a client provides decals or transfers then I will use them Otherwise I hand paint all my patterns. After all, the originals were hand painted so probably had quite a bit of variation in them. Same for me.

Enjoy....

lost scrolls give away at Ferrous Lands

A quick post to let everyone know that over at the blog, Ferrous Lands, they are having a give away of the new Field of Glory supplement, Lost Scrolls. They were the super power of their day. These miniatures are actually the second part of a commission that I've been working on for some time. They are for a client who, over the years, has become a good friend, too. The miniatures are mostly Chariot Miniatures, with a few Essex as well. The pictures only show a small sample of what's been completed.

One thing I like about ancients is the diversity you get with some armies. I, personally, like having an army where I can identify a unit by it's look. I tried to use a few different skin tones to further help identify who is who. Of course, it's a bit easier with the Nubians, pictured above. For skin tones I really like the Reaper Master series of paints. They have great triads that cover many skin types. Well, here are a few German SS troopers from Artizan. I had picked these up sometime last year on a whim. With painting the US airborne it got me in the mood to paint the Germans. This will eventually be a squad of 10 figures and they will be for sale. Contact me if you're interested.

US Paras by Artizan

These are 28mm World War Two figures by Artizan. They are US airborne troops from the 101st airborne division. I have yet to put on the patches and insignia. Normally, I am more of a 15mm guy. But I have to admit, these are nice figures and have tempted me over to the big side. This is part of a larger commission and thus there will be more figures posted on my blog before the commission is complete. I hope you enjoy viewing the figures as much as I am enjoying painting them.

Ken

End of the Year

Yeah, I know. It's been a while since the end of 2009. But I've been behind. I mean, look at the last time I made a post!! Has it really been since November? Well, my excuse is moving, holidays, and illness all in that order. But all of that is behind me so no more excuses.

I thought I would post some year end numbers for Blue Moose Arts. You may find this interesting or maybe just annoying. But I always like little facts like these so I'm going to post them. Last year was the first for Blue Moose Arts. Highlights for the year was my attending Totalcon and Coldwars. Both were great experiences for me. I met some great people and had a lot of fun. Low points included moving (yech!), some family emergencies, and illness.

So what did Blue Moose Arts do in it's inaugural year? Let's break it down by figure size.
For 28mm I painted approximately 75 figures. The majority of them being fantasy figures. As a matter of fact, only 6 of them were historical. I painted another 13 figures somewhere between 20mm and 25mm. Again, fantasy.

For 20mm I painted 104 figures and 4 tank destroyers. All World War Two. About 70% German and 30% Finnish.

For 15mm I painted....a lot! This is by far the most popular size figure that I get requests to paint. As such, I only have estimates of amounts but here goes....I painted about 750 World War Two infantry figures. 500 hundred of those were Germans. I did 122 US and 104 Italians. The remaining were Soviet. Also in the WW2 era was 19 AFV, 10 soft skins, and 15 guns. All of those were German. For the medieval period I painted 19 mounted figures and 15 foot. For the ancient era I painted about 65 mounted figures and 490 foot figures. Oh, and 1 chariot. For nationalities it was quite a mix but probably Roman figures were the majority. New Kingdom Egyptian coming in a close second. For the modern era, I painted 95 infantry figures, 2 seal boats, and 4 Humvee.
Last I have 6mm and 1/25 or 1/300. These are a bit harder to estimate but I painted about 675 figures. Of these only 29 were Napoleonic, the rest being WW2. Also, I painted 16 aircraft in this scale as well as 40 trucks.
Not a bad start for a new painting service. This year I hope to see a big increase in painting. I will be attending Huzzah! in Portland, Maine. Hopefully I will attend some other conventions but for now this is it.
As to what's on the painting board, now... there are 15mm WW2 Germans, 15mm Romans, 15mm Egyptians (ancients), 15mm Phyrric pikes, 28mm WW2 US Airborne, 28mm Fantasy figures, 29mm Gauls, 15mm French Napoleonics, and 15mm Dacians. And these are just commissions. I am painting other things for sale and other things just for me. I also have my hands in many other fires so stay tuned for many great things in 2010.

Until next time...
Ken

Khurasan Romans

This week I've been working on many different projects. But I did want to take the time to share a few photographs of some Khurasan Miniatures Romans that I've completed. Khurasan makes an every expanding range of 15mm ancient and medieval figures. They are finely detailed and paint very well. These figures are for a client in Canada and are part of a larger cavalry force. As more figures are completed I will post the pictures. I encourage anyone who is shopping for 15mm ancients to take a look at Khurasan. If they have something that fits your needs you will be well pleased with the figures.

France, 1940

Another project that I am working on is a collection of 1/300 and 1/285 miniatures representing France during her 1940 struggle. All of the figures are 15mm Battlefront. Each figure is to be individually mounted on 3/4 inch fender washers. Even though only a small portion of the figures are shown they are actually taking over my studio. It seems they are everywhere! The bases will be finished with some ground material and a bit of flocking. I usually do basing last and on all figures at the same time so as to get consistent results. Plus I like to put it off as it isn't my most favorite part of a job. You can get a glimpse of my painting area as well. Well, part of it at least.

Battlefront makes some decent figures although I have seen some more recent figures that I wasn't thrilled with. All of the figures are 15mm Old Glory with the exception of one Essex figure and one Xyston figure. Can you "figure" out which figures they are? The bases are Litko and the ground material is from Gale Force Nine. I'm not the biggest fan of Old Glory as prepping them is a pain and they just seem rough to my eyes. But you know, they do paint up well and they are affordable.

Triarii

Velites

Hmmm one of these figures looks suspiciously tall

Mounted Command

Seleucid pike

I really like the way these came out. The client wanted something a bit wintery with German SS troops. The Sperrverband troops were added into the commission a bit later but I tried to keep the SS look about them. I figured it was late war and the SS "drafted" into service regular Heer and Luftwaffe troops to fill the ranks. So there is a bit a variety in uniform items. Since some of the figures had rolled up sleeves I had to make it a mix of snow and non-snow ground.

Enjoy and let me know what you think!!

Ken

Welcome

Welcome to the first post on my blog. This blog is intended to show my clients and those who wish to follow along, what I am up to in the studio of Blue Moose Arts. I am always painting new things and I will try to keep pace with the blog posts to match what I paint. Also, you may find the occasional comment or rant concerning non-client related miniature painting. I like to talk. Feel free to make any comments you would like and always, always, always, ask questions!
Thank you for looking.
Ken
